In the lead up to International Women’s Day on 6 March, ING DIRECT Dreamstarter Kristy Fox from Circle Movement tells us about 10 Ways, 10 Days – a campaign which aims to build a world that is safer and more equitable for women.
Kristy, tell us a bit about 10 Ways, 10 Days:
At Circle Movement, we firmly believe that one person and one action is all it takes to make a difference.
In our opinion, injustice towards women cannot be stamped out by one charity, one personality or one strategy. Injustice towards women requires a collective strategy, a revolution of compassion, kindness, persistence & determination. This starts with me……and it starts with you.
So, starting 26 February, we’re inviting people to participate in the 10 Ways, 10 Days campaign. This involves taking 10 concrete actions, in the ten days leading up to International Women’s Day, which will inspire a better world for women and girls.
How did you get started with your social enterprise?
We started 10/10 because, sadly, girls & women are lagging behind in many basic human rights. In fact, the oppression of girls and women in the developing world has been described as our generations ‘most pervasive human rights violation’
I have two young daughters, and I want them to grow up in a world filled with opportunity, not limitation. My friends and I, all busy mothers with small children, started Circle Movement three years ago after reading the book ‘Half the Sky’ written by Pulitzer Prize-winning team, Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn.
We were so moved by this book that we had to do something. We began running campaigns to raise awareness around some of the key challenges facing girls & women via book clubs, movie nights, craftivism workshops and fundraising activities.
What’s next for Circle Movement?
Lots! We’re developing a ‘Young Hearts’ program for up and coming humanitarians aged 15-24. In past years we’ve given out five scholarships for young women to attend the Expanse Conference; we aim to broaden this.
We are also very excited about a collaborative community craftivsm project that is taking shape. We are hoping to receive 1000 ‘Bring Back Our Girls’ badges containing the names of the missing Nigerian school girls who were kidnapped in April, 2014. The project was designed to raise awareness around the importance of girls’ education, as well as an opportunity to express solidarity towards the missing girls and their families.
