Mum’s are naturally giving people, that’s a given. Some mothers, however, go above and beyond with business ideas that make the world a better place. With help from ING Dreamstarter, they were able to fund their brilliant business ideas and have a real impact.
Meet Ana from Amber Drop Honey
Bee Keeping started off as a hobby for Ana but grew into a passion that changed her life. As she got more involved in the hobby, she realised that if bee populations continue disappearing all over the world, there will be serious consequences. So, Ana and her husband Sven bought a large property on the Mid-North Coast that’s ideal for for full-time bee keeping and set about rescuing multiple families of bees.
Our bees are like family to us, especially because we know the consequences if bee populations decline. So we bought a property in the beautiful Mid-North Coast, dominated by bush and backing onto a National Park. It’s the perfect place for our foraging bees.
Their family run company, Amber Drop Honey, currently has over 200 hives and counting. What’s more, 5% of all their profits go to Save the Bees Australia. Ana recommends the Amber Drop Sweetest Thing Honey gift box. A beautiful selection of three sustainable honey varieties presented in an environmentally friendly box. The perfect gift for any bee and honey lovers.
Meet Kayla from Crema Joe
Kayla runs a business that’s not just satisfying, it also goes a long way to addressing the global landfill problem. Crema Joe sells reusable coffee pods, and when you consider that Australians use over 6 million coffee pods every day, it couldn’t be more timely. To run a business like Crema Joe while looking after her young bub takes dedication, patience and incredible organisational skills. But Kayla learnt quickly that she can’t “do it all” and she’s at peace with that.
I’ve accepted that my time is more valuable than it has ever been before – I want to be either working on my business and driving social change, or spending quality time with my family.
Kayla says that the whole experience has made her very supportive of return-to-work mums, which she employs at her company whenever she can. For Mother’s Day she recommends the Crema Joe SealPod Start Pack with Bespoke Coffee – a great, cost-effective way to kick-off your mum’s guilt-free coffee habit!
Meet Nadine from Surf Sock
While living close to the beach, Nadine became increasingly concerned about plastic pollution building up in the ocean. She also wanted a job that allowed her to spend more time with her children. Nadine began to notice that her son would use breakable plastic bags to help him slip into his wetsuit. That inspired her and her business partner Lucy to invent and market The Surf Sock.
Being a mum has helped me see the world through the eyes of a child and I have learnt what powerful change agents kids are.
Made out of offcuts from sailcloth suppliers, The Surf Sock is a handy item that reduces the need for plastic bags. Both Nadine and Lucy say that motherhood has made them realise just how important it is to teach children values. For Mother’s Day they recommend the re-Sail Surf Sock gift pack which includes an ultra-light upcycled backpack and a stylish waterproof pouch for a phone.
