Duncan & Sable: Stage 1 – Knowing when it’s time to upgrade your home

It’s been about four years since I first made the decision to move back to Victoria for good. I spent years back and forth between Dad’s side of the family in Western Australia, and Mum’s in Victoria. Finally, I decided to trade those late afternoon thunderstorms of Western Australia, for the more temperate weather of Victoria and to be closer to Mum.

When I arrived back in Geelong, a small townhouse with a quaint courtyard and a park at the end of the street, was all I needed. It was close to my Mum’s property, and more importantly, it was an affordable change of scenery. Change is as good as a holiday, isn’t it?

Then I met Sable. That was when I knew things were going to change.

Back then, he was just a wriggling black fur ball – one of the hundreds of litters that Mum had come into contact with through a connection she’d met during her work as a trainer. A purebred Australian Kelpie, he was really something else. My boy is actually the grandson (or great grandson… I can’t remember) of the famous Koko, also known as Red Dog. Clearly, his pedigree never mattered all that much to me, I just like telling people the story.

Then I met Sable. That was when I knew things were going to change.

When I first made the decision to get another pup, my only condition was that he was black. Not only is black the rarest colour for a Kelpie, but I’d always had black Kelpies previously and I wanted to keep their lineage alive. When I told Mum I wanted to adopt him, she had one condition of her own – he needed plenty of space to run around. It was all the excuse I needed to start saving for a new home!

Since this wasn’t my first rodeo, I knew what to expect from the home buying process. I’d been through the process with a lot of different banks, but had recently moved my everyday finances over to ING DIRECT. I still did my due diligence comparing different home loan products, laying everything out side by side – that’s just what I do in any scenario. The reality of the situation was that I already knew that I trusted ING DIRECT to handle my banking needs, so when it was all said and done it made sense to trust them with my home loan too.

If changes in circumstance mean that it’s time to reconsider what you need from your home, it’s important to list out what your home is currently lacking and get a clear idea of where you should start your search.
