Handmade Holidays: Keepsake Boxes

The festive season is a time filled with the joy of shared laughter and generous gift-giving, generally speaking. But what happens when you find yourself stumped trying to find the perfect gift to give those you care about most? Rather than sifting through the shelves at the local shops again and again, why not put in a little bit of extra love (and keep a few extra dollars in your pocket) with one of these three handmade gifts!

We all have that friend, the experience collector. Although appreciative of a material thing or two, we know that if we really want to get to the heart of them, we’ll need to dig a little deeper. So, when the holidays roll around and we’re faced with finding a gift that will really mean something to them – it can be a tough task!

Whilst we can’t give them the enlightenment that comes from traversing the globe, or the joy that fills their heart when their newborn smiles, we can give them a stylish way to collect all the trinkets that remind them how those moments feel.

Keepsake Boxes

These adorable little keepsake boxes are completely customisable, and can easily pass for books, making them perfect to store and stack around the house.

What you’ll need

  • 1 x piece of cardboard (35cm x 21cm)
  • 1 x cardboard strips (21cm x 3cm)
  • 2 x cardboard strip (19cm x 3cm)
  • 1 x sheet of decorative paper (27cm x 24cm)
*Get creative with your paper choices – use old maps for travellers, baby-themed wrapping paper for new families, or the glossy pages of an old magazine for your fashion-forward friend.
  • Tie and clasp
  • Ruler
  • Craft scissors
  • Craft knife
  • Double-sided tape
  • Decorative tape
  • Pencil

How to make it

  • Score the large piece of cardboard at 160mm from each short edge and fold – it should look like a book
  • Line the outside edges with double-sided tape
  • Secure your choice of decorative paper – take care to remove any air bubbles
  • Attach your small cardboard strips inside using decorative tape around the edges and corners
  • Fill with memories!

Give the gift of memories

It’ll mean a lot more than another fancy scented candle or baby onesie that’ll be grown out of in a few months (and it’ll honestly cost a lot less too)!

Looking for something slightly simpler? Maybe create a jar of pre-prepared Lamington mix or a hand-painted tea towel full of holiday treats.
