Get saved by lunch club

Between getting to work, coffees and keeping your wardrobe sufficiently stocked, ensuring you’re well fed can take a toll on your wallet – especially if you fancy a stroll to the local cafe each day. Our latest research shows that Aussies spend a whopping $129 per month buying lunch at work.

Saving some extra coin each month can be easy with two words: Lunch Club.

The first rule of lunch club, is you can speak about lunch club. In fact we want you to find like-minded colleagues who are ready to take turns at supplying lunch, one week at a time. Lunch club members contribute $20 per week, and the person ‘on duty’ pays for and brings in lunch for their allocated week, before kicking back and relaxing while their colleagues make all the effort in weeks two, three and four.

Lunch club could help you save a potential $850 a year which you can put towards that next savings goal!

The benefits of starting a lunch club are clear:

  1. You only have to plan lunch one week per month
  2. Bulk-buying ingredients  from the supermarket is heaps cheaper
  3. You’re less likely to waste food, which is good for the environment
  4. You’ll never leave your lunch at home again

You’ll reduce your spending, so you can save it for more important things (like a holiday from work, for example)And here are a few top tips to make the most of your new crew:

1. Set a budget:

Decide on an approximate weekly budget for group members to use as a guide.

2. Outline do’s and don’ts:

Fussy eaters needn’t be a problem, simply figure out what ingredients are no go’s and which are fair play.

3. Be a bargain hunter:

Let the supermarket catalogue lead the way and opt for weekly specials when you’re on duty.

4. Take baby steps:

If supplying lunch five days a week / one week a month is a little too much, start small instead – even if you’re doing lunch club for two or three days a week, there are savings to be had.
