Even though our plan was not to purchase a place for at least a year or so – at least this is what we agreed was feasible with our savings – we still felt like it was important to start exploring the market.
We started heading out to Saturday inspections, and by ‘we’ I mean me and Mum. Jordan really enjoys spending his weekends on the golf course… that feels worth highlighting.
Honestly, I was pretty surprised by the variance in terms of the quality of the houses we looked at within our price range. But it was comforting getting out there and seeing what was in the market. It reaffirmed our intention to purchase something older, something that we could eventually fix up later down the line when we were better set up financially. It also assured me that the kinds of things that were mandatory for us were available within our budget.

Since we always knew that moving into the property down the line was a real possibility, we really liked the idea of finding a house that we could make our own. Better yet, we liked the idea of finding a house we could one day make into a home.
The number one thing that stood out during this part of the process was how important it was to get out there and do some ground work. It wasn’t until we saw what was out there that we were really sure what we were getting ourselves into.
Plus, don’t be afraid to use your network for advice. The fact that I could always ask people at work questions while I undertook my research really helped give us the insights we needed to find the best property to suit our needs and nail down exactly what we were looking for. Doing our own research also helped make us more discerning. Because we knew what different price points could get us around the area, we felt prepared to be practical and level-headed investors when the time came.
Little did we know though that the time was going to come a lot sooner than we expected.
