From rainforests to sprawling coastlines – we might be a little biased, but we think Australia has it all. And there’s no better way to explore our incredible backyard than on an epic road trip. So get your crew together, pick a destination and make sure your car is ready to hit the road.
The Great Ocean Road
Possibly Australia’s most famous road – say hello to the Twelve Apostles as you make your way from Torquay to Allansford.
Moss Vale Road
Wind your way through the valleys and rainforests of the Southern Highlands, including Kangaroo Valley, Bowral and Fitzroy Falls.
Gibb River Road
Get off the beaten track and into the heart of WA’s Kimberly region. This 660km road encompasses Aboriginal art, gorges, waterfalls and outback cattle stations.
Cairns to Cape York
You’ll want to carve out a good chunk of time for this 1000km trip from Cairns to the very tip of Australia, including time to linger on two of Australia’s World Heritage sites – the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest.
Tasmania’s East Coast
Start at Hobart and travel up the east coast to the white sand Bay of Fires, taking detours along the way to enjoy Freycinet National Park and picturesque beaches.
A straight trip from the goldfields of Western Australia to the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. Keep your eyes peeled for emus, kangaroos, dingos and camels.
The Grand Pacific Drive
If you’re looking to escape Sydney for the weekend, take this scenic drive across the Sea Cliff Bridge and through seaside towns such as Shellharbour, Kiama and Thirroul. Stop off to explore charming cafes and quiet beaches.
Once you’ve decided on your trip, you’ll be raring to hit the road. But first, check out our handy checklist to make sure your car is in tip top shape.
Ensure your car is serviced
- Clean the car inside and out (and make sure the windscreen is sparkling clean).
- Cover headlights and front of your car with a protective sheet to prevent bugs.
- Make sure you know where your tire iron and jack is and how to operate them.
- Check your spare tyre.
- Pack a fire extinguisher.
- Pack sun protectors for the front windows.
- Bring towels to clean dirty windshields and oil spills.
- Bring a plastic funnel for water and oil.
- Make sure you have appropriate car insurance for your car and the drivers.
- Make sure the radio and aux cord are in working order, and get your road trip tunes ready (this probably should have been number one).
- Just before you set off, make a final check of tyre condition and pressure, fuses and horn, high and low beam headlights, wipers, oils and fluids.
