How to be extra-safe on the road

We’re all aware of the dangers that lurk on our roads. But there’s no need to start walking everywhere, or to invest in a horse and carriage. Just keep these simple tips in mind every time you hit the road to reduce your risk of having an accident.

  • Check your mirrors and adjust them before you set off.
  • Check your blind spots and merge lanes safely. Keep a safe distance from the car in front of you.
  • Keep left unless overtaking.
  • Don’t drive when you’re tired.
  • Share long distance drives and take regular breaks.
  • Ensure all passengers are wearing a seat belt.
  • Slow down for hazards and adjust speed in different weather conditions.

The safest cars to drive in Australia in 2018 were Toyota Corolla, Mercedes Benz A-Class and Holden Acadia, according to ANCAP.

Of course, no matter how safe you are, accidents can still happen, so make sure you have appropriate car insurance, like ING’s Car Insurance.

Your own safety is number one, but it’s also important to think about how to keep your car safe from thieves.

Here are some simple ways to deter thieves:

  • Park off the street whenever possible
  • Always remove your valuables from the car
  • Always lock your car
  • Keep track of your spare keys
  • Park among other cars to blend in
  • Never leave your car running

The most commonly stolen cars are Nissan Pulsar, Holden Commodore, Toyota Hilux, Ford Falcon and Nissan Navara. You can check your car’s theft risk rating here.

If an accident does come your way, make sure you’re protected with appropriate car insurance.
